UFC Best Bets: UFC 255

By Jacob Long – Senior Gambling Correspondent

On Saturday, Nov. 21, UFC 255 is bringing us two (count ’em, TWO) flyweight title bouts: Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Alex Perez for the men’s title and Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jennifer Maia for the women’s title.

There are plenty of fights on this card that deserve your attention and bank roll, but I want to focus on the co-main events and the odds that provide value to all the degenerates who stay awake until midnight to watch people punch each other.

If you followed my picks for UFC 254 exactly, then you should be up on the house. On this card, I want to take some plus odds pick to increase those winnings! Carpe Forte!

(All statistics via Sherdog and all Odds via DraftKings unless otherwise noted)

Valentina Shevchenko (-1667)!! vs. Jennifer Maia (+850)

The picks: Shevchenko in R3 or R4 (1u at +375) and Shevchenko in R5 or decision (1u at +175)

I know what you’re thinking: Shevchenko is going to brutalize Maia in R1 and then finish it in R2. Maybe that’s true, but let’s look at the value. “Bullet” has gone all five rounds in three of her last six fights, including her title win against Joanna Jedrzejczyk, but she has clearly demonstrated her ability to win via finish like in February when she elbowed Katlyn Chookagian into oblivion.

The difference maker is that I think she only pushes for a finish at the right opportunity. Maia is going to come into the fight ready for that quick finish and stave it off until the middle rounds. At that point, “Bullet” starts looking for the kill. But maybe Maia is so scared she doesn’t even get close and runs away until the full time.

I just don’t see any real path to a win for the underdog, so taking the value in Shevchenko in the middle-late rounds seems best.

Deiveson Figueiredo (-286) vs. Alex Perez (+225)

The picks: Figueiredo in R1 or R2 (1u at +110) and Under 1.5 rounds (1u at +138)

Oh man, this is going to be fun. Figueiredo has been knocking dudes out for a while now and Perez has a ton of ways he can beat you. I just don’t see many ways this fight makes it past R2.

I guess Perez could try to wrestle Figueiredo and keep him from striking? I just don’t think that ends well either. Go watch any of “Daico’s” last three matches and see how effortlessly he finishes them. He finishes noted-good-fighter Joseph Benavidez twice in a row after choking out noted-not-as-good-fighter Tim Elliott.

Sure, Perez beat Jussier Formiga who’s pretty good, but before that he was just beating up jobbers to get up the card. He is coming into this fight overmatched and it is going to result in an early finish in this flyweight title matchup.
